On Wednesday, May 7 2008, the country’s leading mortgage experts
gathered at the Sheraton hotel to debate solutions for Turkey’s mortgage market
given today’s turbulent market environment.
The event, entitled Mortgage 360°, was co-organized by FinZoom,
Smart Financial Decisions and the European Mortgage Federation (EMF). It covered
topics ranging from the integration of EU mortgage credit markets and Turkey’s status
to developments in the nascent secondary mortgage markets in Turkey. The following
experts sat on the event’s discussion panel:
- Ms. Annik Lambert , Secretary General, EMF (moderator)
- Ms. Hande Serin, VP Mortgage Marketing, Finansbank
- Mr. F. Murat Aysan, General Manager, DD Mortgage
- Mr. Umur Güven, Executive Vice President, Garanti Mortgage
- Mr. Martjin Van Mancius, Mortgage Director, Denizbank
- Mr. Ali Hepşen, Professor of Finance, İstanbul Üniversitesi
- Mr. Yalçın Özge Okat, Specialist, Capital Markets Board (CMB) of Turkey
The roundtable event consisted of three presentations, each
followed by discussion and debate from the panel and Q/A from event participants.
Ms. Lambert began by presenting the current status of the EU’s white paper to integrate
and streamline mortgage markets throughout the EU. Next, Mr. Okat presented all
regulatory developments related to the secondary mortgage market for Turkey. Last,
Mr. Hepşen presented his academic research on historical real estate bubble trends
and their effect on economies throughout the Asian and US markets.
The event stimulated a much needed productive debate about
solutions for moving Turkey’s mortgage sector forward during difficult economic
times. FinZoom thanks all those who contributed to the event’s success, most notably
our panelist and lead sponsor, the European Mortgage Federation.
